The Unaccredited Trainee in Paediatric Plastic and Burn Surgery position within The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) Burns Unit / Children’s Hospital Burns Research Institute (CHBRI) is available for the 2027 Clinical Year, from 01 February 2027 to 06 February 2028. The position has both clinical and research components. The successful applicant will be responsible for inpatient, outpatient and operating theatre patient management and be responsible to the head of the plastic surgery unit. They will also be responsible for initiating projects and participating in ongoing clinical research. The unaccredited trainee will be required to participate on the on call plastic surgery roster after hours. 

The CHW Burns Unit is part of the New South Wales Severe Burns injury service and is the largest paediatric burn service in Australia. The multidisciplinary team includes both paediatric and plastic surgeons. In the department, staff may undertake a wide range of both laboratory and clinical research. The position offers an exciting opportunity to develop or enhance clinical experience in the management of burns in children and to undertake research projects in burns.

Selection Criteria:

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  2. Minimum three years post graduate experience.
  3. 6 months experience in relevant subspecialty or equivalent preferable and a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in plastic surgery.
  4. Emergency Management of Severe Trauma Course (EMST / ATLS) (Provider / Instructor) and Emergency Management of Severe Burns Course (Provider / Instructor).
  5. Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.
  6. Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.
  7. Demonstrated contribution to the development of hospital services e.g. participation in Paediatric Junior Staff matters, representation on behalf of the Hospital, participation in Hospital Committees preferable.
  8. Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research proposal.
