John Hunter Hospital (JHH), located on the traditional Country of the Awabakal and Worimi peoples, is one of the most utilised healthcare campuses in NSW and has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the state.  The NSW Government is investing $835 million to redevelop the John Hunter and John Hunter Children’s Hospitals.

The redevelopment of the John Hunter and John Hunter Children’s Hospitals will deliver a significant expansion providing additional capacity and purpose-built infrastructure, to enable the implementation of contemporary models of care. 
The project will:
•    Deliver enhanced and expanded facilities with a new 7-storey acute services building.
•    Deliver a new Emergency Department to meet a projected future demand of over 95,000 presentations each year.
•    Double the capacity of the Intensive Care Unit and provide capacity for future expansion.
•    Provide 22 operating theatres and 9 interventional suites to respond to significantly increasing demand.
•    Deliver five procedure rooms for endoscopy and minor procedures.
•    Provide purpose-built flexible education space co-located within clinical services. 

JHH Surgical Services offers a comprehensive Surgical Education and Training Program, aimed at providing all Unaccredited Trainees and SRMOs with the skills and knowledge required to apply to Surgical Education Programs.

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of surgical patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The unaccredited trainee is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality. 

Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the unaccredited trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. They will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding a patient’s care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  2. Minimum three years post graduate medical experience at commencement of post with at least 12 months recent demonstrated neurosurgical experience
  3. Demonstrated commitment to pursue a career in Neurosurgery with a view for further training with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons by providing evidence of continued professional development
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise
  5. Demonstrated effective teamwork, time-management and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary clinical care team
  6. Evidence of continued professional development and commitment to self education and teaching undergraduates and post graduates
