What you’ll be doing
As an Unaccredited Trainee in ENT Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery you will:
manage inpatients of the Department including admissions, clerking, and ward patient care along with the investigation, management and fulfillment of patient discharge duties in a timely fashion
Participate in the management of outpatient and ambulatory care patients
Attend the operating theatre in an assistant role as required
Participate in the afterhours roster covering St George and Sutherland Hospitals.
The role is based at St George and Sutherland Hospitals for 6 months each.
The department is actively involved in the management of complex ENT and Head & Neck cases and participates in a multi-disciplinary Head & Neck cancer clinic. It has close association with oncology, radiotherapy and affiliated health services.

St George Hospital is an accredited, principal teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales. It is the largest hospital in SESLHD with 627 inpatient beds. It is a Level 1 Trauma Centre and a leader in trauma and emergency management in NSW. The hospital’s proximity to Sydney airport makes it a vital service, providing first response to the airport precinct.
The hospital is in Kogarah, 14 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD and a kilometre from Botany Bay. It is well serviced by buses, trains and major roads. The area is well known for its cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants, as well as its food and cultural markets which showcase the distinct flavours and traditions of Kogarah's multicultural community.
Selection Criteria
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
- At least three years post graduate experience in public hospital service (or equivalent)
- Ability to independently undertake history and detailed assessment of ear, nose and throat, head and neck patients and be able to accurately describe the findings to the senior colleague, understanding the nuances of anatomy and pathology. Ability to undertake a detailed assessment of the ear and ability to clear the ear under microscopic control
- Ability to assess the nose and airways via nasendoscopy, with the experience to know what is normal and what might represent pathology.
- Ability to assess the airway, with knowledge and ability to examine the larynx and pharynx and give a detailed explanation and description of findings.
- Ability to independently assess and begin the management of acute ENT emergencies seen after hours. The ability to accurately describe detailed findings is essential.
- Have a working understanding of the simple ENT surgeries including adenotonsillectomy, grommet insertion, as well as standard ear and nasal surgery, along with an understanding of postoperative management, assessment and awareness of postoperative complications
- Have experience in assisting with ENT/Head and Neck operative cases, and constantly striving to gain further experience in the management of more complex ear, nose and throat/head and neck surgical cases.
