What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the position is to provide quality and timely care to undifferentiated patients attending the Emergency Department (ED). Collaboration throughout the organisation and with external stakeholders is essential to providing seamless care across the patient journey. Medical Officers (MOs) work under an appropriate level of supervision according to their scope, level of experience and competence to evaluate, diagnose, treat and provide consultation to patients of all ages presenting in any condition. Trainees undertaking the care of patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and to seek consultation with their colleagues when appropriate.


Trainees work under supervision according to their competence performing the following duties:

  • Assessment, investigation, initiating management, coordinating admission and/or discharge of ED patients as part of the ED multidisciplinary team.
  • Communicating assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient's care, including in the electronic patient records and discharge summaries.
  • Communicating with the patient / family regarding the patient's condition and management plans, verbally and in writing.
  • Coordinating diagnostic tests and consultations with other medical specialists.
  • Arranging the patient discharge process and liaising with local medical officers and community-based care modalities for optimal post discharge care.
  • Participation in the weekend and after-hours roster is expected and is rostered as required.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Criteria for the role (minimum PGY3+).
  2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising the clinical skills, judgement and expertise at the required level of competency.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  4. Demonstrated excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  5. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
  6. Demonstrated ongoing commitment to further self-education and professional development.
  7. A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with preparedness and ability to participate in afterhours (including night shifts), weekend rostering overtime and on-call rosters within required rotations between services.
  8. Evidence of a current unrestricted drivers’ licence and the ability to maintain. Ability and willingness to drive/travel as the role requires. This may involve driving long distances and overnight stays.

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases

This is a Category ‘A’ position, please read and understand NSW Health policy directive PD2024_015. All new employees must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. OASV requirements also include proof of vaccination against influenza and is compulsory for NSW Staff that enter any Residential Aged Care Facility (RACF) or who work in NSW Health owned and operated RACFs.
