What you’ll be doing

The Cardiothoracic department (including the facility at St George Private) performs around 200 cardiac and 200 thoracic surgical procedures per year, and general thoracic surgery (including minimally invasive). There are generally between 12 – 20 inpatients at any one time. Most of the cardiac caseload is coronary and valvular surgery, as well as routine and emergency aortic surgery. Minimally invasive surgery cardiac and thoracic surgery is performed according to surgeon preferences. Assistance at the adjacent Private Hospital may be required.

There are 4 consultants, who operate a daily theatre list on a rotating roster. Generally, 4 registrars (including one accredited trainee) staff a 2-shift roster from Monday to Friday (3 registrars from 0700 – 1700, and one from 1200 – 2000). Weekends and weeknight cover are rostered 1:4 providing a 24-hour service. 

Unaccredited Trainees are expected to co-ordinate and attend weekly Outpatient/Post-operative Review Clinic, as well as Pre-Admissions Clinic. Departmental teaching occurs weekly.

Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. (a) Ideally experience in a Cardiothoracic Surgical Department (b) ICU experience preferred, but not essential
  3. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
  4. Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  5. High level communication skills, both written and verbal, skills in time management, prioritisation and problem solving.
  6. Preparedness to participate in an afterhours roster.
  7. Commitment to own continuing professional development and self-education including working towards completion of relevant College examinations ie Preference given to completion of GSSE
  8. 1. Commitment to quality improvement and patient safety 2. At least three years' post graduate experience in public hospital service (or equivalent)
