An exciting opportunity is now available for a motivated and detail-oriented Clinical Coder Trainee to join the supportive coding team based at John Hunter Hospital (JHH) you’ll gain hands-on experience coding records across John Hunter, Belmont and Tomaree Hospitals while undertaking the HNELHD Clinical Coding Progression Training Program.

This is a fantastic opportunity to build your coding career within a collaborative and highly experienced team environment as we embark on a state based digital medical record and computer assisted coding.

About the Role

As a Clinical Coder Trainee, you will learn to accurately classify diseases and procedures using ICD-10-AM, ACHI and Australian Coding Standards while working across a broad and highly varied casemix.

John Hunter Hospital is a major tertiary referral and trauma centre for Northern NSW and is home to one of only three tertiary paediatric hospitals in NSW. This provides exposure to a wide range of specialties and complex clinical presentations, making this an exceptional learning environment for emerging coders.

A typical week will involve:

  • Coding inpatient episodes across John Hunter, Belmont and Tomaree Hospitals

  • Reviewing and analysing clinical documentation in both paper and electronic medical records

  • Using 3M Code Finder and ICD-10-AM coding books

  • Participating in coding education sessions, audits and team meetings

  • Reviewing and correcting coding queries, errors and quality indicators

  • Working towards coding throughput and accuracy KPIs as part of the structured trainee progression program

 

About You

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Passionate about healthcare and clinical coding

  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail

  • Eager to learn and open to feedback

  • Able to analyse complex clinical documentation

  • Comfortable working within a collaborative team environment

  • Motivated to build long-term coding knowledge and capability

 

Essential Requirements

  • Successful completion of a recognised ICD-10-AM, ACHI and Australian Coding Standards qualification (HIM degree, HIMAA Certificate IV or Diploma in Clinical Coding)
  • Previous experience working within healthcare
  • Familiarity with healthcare IT systems and medical terminology

 

Requirements:

  • Clinical Coder (Administration Office Level 4) Successful completion of a recognised ICD10-AM & ACHI and Australian Coding Standards coding qualification.

     

  • Clinical Coder (Administration Officer Level 5) - Successful completion of a recognised ICD-10AM & ACHI and Australian Coding Standards coding qualification with Australian coding experience.

 

  • A skills test will be undertaken at the interview to gauge the coding level of the applicant.
