This role sits within NSW Health’s Murrumbidgee Local Health District as part of the Regionally Enhanced Training Network (RETN) Western NSW pathway.
You’ll rotate through a diverse mix of regional and metropolitan training environments, including placements in Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and opportunities across NSW, interstate (e.g. Royal Hobart Hospital), and major Sydney teaching hospitals.
This unique structure provides exposure to both high-volume metropolitan services and the breadth of regional healthcare, allowing you to build a well-rounded clinical skillset while contributing to communities where your expertise makes a real impact.
You’ll work closely with experienced Specialist Ophthalmologists and multidisciplinary teams, delivering care across inpatient and outpatient settings while progressing through your RANZCO-accredited training pathway
What you'll be doing
This position is for the Regionally Enhanced Training Network - Western NSW pathway. The proposed training pathway is 12-month placements at Royal Hobart Hospital, Port Macquarie or Wagga Wagga Base Hospital, and existing Metropolitan training posts in Sydney, followed by a 24-month placement in Wagga Wagga. The trainee may also be rotated to other RAZNCO accredited training facilities in NSW and interstate.

Trainees will work under supervision of Specialist Ophthalmologists to assess, investigate, diagnose, treat and provide ongoing management of Ophthalmology inpatients and outpatients performing clinical procedures under supervision or as approved, to provide high quality patient care, whilst building on skills to become competent in the practice of Ophthalmology in accordance with RANZCO training requirements.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Completion of 2 years postgraduate years of medical practice by the start of the new JMO clinical year.
- RANZCO confirmed eligibility for the Vocational Training Position (VTP).
- Demonstrated record in working independently in a supervised clinical environment combining self-education and continued professional development, an ability to consistently apply established knowledge and skill, initiative and ability to seek guidance to resolve issues when required.
- Demonstrated record to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and commitment to the organisation.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Demonstrated evidence of participation and leadership in extracurricular activities to benefit the community.
- Demonstrated orientation to rural/regional practice through life experiences, medical school and/or residency, outlining evidence of commitment to the provision of health care in a rural setting, preferably with experience of rural or regional medicine.
