What you'll be doing
This position can be applied by both Trainees and Advanced Trainees for CICM.
This position is appropriate for medical officers (PGY 4 and above) who are interested in training in intensive care medicine. Trainees will either be registered with, or in the process of applying to, the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM). The position is suitable for trainees at all stages of their training and based on clinical experience and level of training, the ICU will then determine the most appropriate clinical role to align with the units’ operational requirements and trainees requirements. The purpose of the position is to provide effective clinical management and excellent care to critically ill patients under the supervision of an Intensive Care Specialist. Trainees will be expected to develop expertise in medical practice in a complex clinical environment, and to participate in the core training program of the College of Intensive Care Medicine.
Position Summary and Local Background
The Intensive Care Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is one of Australia's largest, and provides care to over 3800 patients admitted per annum to 52 beds. RPA is one of the two ECMO referral centers in NSW. Our service co-manages patients from all clinical departments at the hospital, including trauma, liver and renal transplantation and bone marrow transplantation units.
RPA ICU comprises 4 contiguous patient care areas: Two general ICUs, a cardiothoracic surgical ICU and a neurosurgical ICU. Rotations to Medicine, Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine, Paediatrics and Rural are available for CICM Trainees.
The roster incorporates equal experience in all of our units-general ICU, Cardiac and neurosurgical day shifts as well as night shifts. Trainees work a week on/week off roster with approximately two weeks of days for every week of nights.
