Where you’ll be working
The vision for South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) is ‘exceptional care, healthier lives’. SESLHD is committed to enabling our community to be healthy and well, and to providing the best possible compassionate care when people need it.
Prince of Wales Hospital and Community Health Services is a major teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre, providing excellent healthcare to south-eastern Sydney and specialist health and medical services to NSW.
We have 450 inpatient beds and almost 3,000 staff. Each year we care for more than 60,000 patients in our Emergency Department and have around 50,000 admissions to the inpatient units of our hospital. We also have a busy outpatient service and rural outreach service and provide more than 900,000 occasions of non-admitted patient care each year.
Our hospital is affiliated with various Universities and premier medical teaching facilities which enables our staff to provide excellence in healthcare in conjunction with our commitment to quality clinical teaching and leading medical research.
Our Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
The Prince of Wales ICU is committed to high quality Intensive Care Medicine training, as evidenced by our great exam success rate. Teaching programs consist of material pertinent for college training. The Department is led by world-recognised, well-respected Intensivists and our doctors are supported by highly skilled and motivated nursing staff with a deep knowledge of critical illness. We have one of the strongest team atmospheres in the hospital and work hard to foster a friendly, supportive environment. We also acknowledge the importance of staff education and well-being, which in turn contributes to effective patient care.
What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the position is to manage patients requiring intensive care, those at risk of clinical deterioration requiring intensive care, plus pre- and post-intensive care evaluation, whilst participating in the core training program of the College of Intensive Care Medicine. A limited number of rotations to other services for trainees looking for accredited training in Paediatric ICU at Sydney Children’s Hospital and ICU or Anaesthetics at Bathurst Base Hospital may be available. A limited number of rotations for trainees looking for accredited training in Medicine and Anaesthetics at Prince of Wales Hospital may also be available.
Critically ill patients include patients with life-threatening single and multiple organ system failure, those at risk of clinical deterioration as well as those requiring resuscitation and/or management in an intensive care unit. Intensive Care Trainees work under the supervision of Specialist Intensive Care Physicians, assisting to manage, diagnose and treat the disturbances associated with severe medical and surgical illness and the conditions that cause them. This may include management of deteriorating and seriously ill patients outside the intensive care unit as well as the intra-hospital transport of critically ill patients.
The Prince of Wales Intensive Care service is accredited by the CICM at the level of General Training (Gen), Cardio and Neuro, and is responsible for a general ICU and a mixed HDU/ICU, as well as a separate mixed general-cardiothoracic ICU .
