At John Hunter Hospital, we're entering a new era of critical care with the opening of our new Acute Services Building in November 2026, including a purpose-built, state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit designed to support the next generation of patient care, education, research and innovation.


We are seeking passionate and collaborative Intensivists to join one of Australia's leading tertiary referral intensive care services. As the major referral centre for the Hunter, Mid North Coast and Northern NSW regions, John Hunter Hospital provides specialist care to a diverse population and manages some of the most complex and critically ill patients in the country, including major trauma, neurosurgery, stroke, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, ECMO and retrieval medicine.
 

This position offers an initial one-year fixed-term appointment with an eligibility list which will be created for future permanent & temporary full & part time roles within JHH ICU.

High-Acuity and Diverse Clinical Practice
As a Staff Specialist, you will provide specialist intensive care services across a broad range of disciplines, including trauma, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, complex medical and surgical patients, rapid response services and retrieval medicine. You will also participate in the department's senior on-call roster and contribute to the care of patients across the Greater Newcastle network.

Hunter Retrieval Service
John Hunter ICU works closely with the Hunter Retrieval Service, supporting critically ill patients across regional and rural communities. This partnership provides a unique opportunity to contribute to retrieval medicine and ensure equitable access to specialist critical care throughout the region.

Essential Requirements
Applicants must possess:
• Intensivist Specialist registration and Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM)
• Demonstrated commitment to clinical excellence, education, research and collaborative patient-centred care
• A desire to contribute to the ongoing development of a progressive and innovative Intensive Care service
