Staff Specialist in General Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine 
John Hunter Children’s Hospital

About the role
John Hunter Children’s Hospital is seeking an experienced General Paediatrician to join the General Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine Service to provide clinical management and treatment of patients of John Hunter Children’s Hospital/HNEKidsHealth. 

This role involves providing specialist paediatric services to inpatients admitted under the Adolescent Service conducting regular paediatric outpatient clinics and participating in the acute general paediatric on-call roster. The Staff Specialist will be recognised for expertise in the holistic care of adolescents, including Eating Disorders, Drug and Alcohol Disorders and/or Psychiatry field. They will have recent experience in the management of young people with one or all of these sub-specialties and a personal commitment to enhancing their skills across a broad range of Youth and Adolescent care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality, evidence-based and patient-centred care to children and young people across inpatient, outpatient and on-call settings. 
  • Deliver specialist paediatric services to adolescents, including those admitted under the Adolescent Service and attending outpatient clinics.
  • Participate in the acute general paediatric on-call roster and contribute to timely clinical handover and care coordination. 
  • Apply expertise in adolescent health, including areas such as Eating Disorders, Youth Drug and Alcohol and/or mental health care. 
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated, safe and effective patient care.
  • Supervise, teach and support junior medical staff, students and multidisciplinary team members. 

Essential requirements

  • Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist Paediatrician, or equivalent recognition via AHPRA/RACP pathways. 
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Paediatrics and Child Health (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated experience in general paediatrics, including inpatient and outpatient care of children and adolescents. 
  • Recent experience in adolescent health, including management of Eating Disorders, Youth Drug and Alcohol and/or mental health presentations. 
  • High level clinical, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
