The Role

The After Hours Nurse Manager (AHNM) is responsible for overall management of staff, patients and the facility, as an onsite representation of the Executive team. The focus of this position is to ensure quality patient care is achieved by facilitating appropriate patient placement and bed utilization within available capacity. The AHNM provides leadership to coordinate patient flow, assess critical situations and initiate contingency plans.
The roles and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Access and patient flow management that optimises patient safety
  • Management of staffing resources
  • Oversight of clinical management issues
  • Management of incidents and complaints
  • Disaster management – Incident Controller role after hours.
  • Appropriate liaison with on call executive and senior management
  • Collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams

Selection Criteria

  1. Current unrestricted nurses / midwives’ registration through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA).
  2. Demonstrated broad acute clinical and operational management experience within a complex health care environment, including previous department management experience.
  3. Post graduate qualification in Health Management or similar or significant previous management experience, or a combination of previous management experience and qualification.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  5. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the NSW health CORE Values; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  6. Proven leadership qualities and the ability to set priorities, establish and achieve agreed objectives particularly related to patient flow processes and KPI achievement.
  7. Demonstrated high level communication skills, experience in leading, decision making, problem solving and conflict resolution
  8. Demonstrated computer literacy including a working knowledge of health information systems
