REQ613974 - St George Hospital - Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer - Permanent Full Time
The Role
The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer is part of the multidisciplinary team and plays a vital role in improving access for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients admitted to St George Hospital. This position is key in building trusting relationships between the Aboriginal community and St George Hospital, and in working collaboratively with hospital staff and other agencies across clinical and community settings.
Working across a variety of clinical areas, the Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer will advocate for and support the cultural needs of patients and their families.
The position is based within the Social Work Team at St George Hospital, linked to the wider Aboriginal Health Workforce, and supported by the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Aboriginal Health Directorate.

Selection Criteria
- Being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational qualification for this position under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads, to work independently as well as part of a team and to work within a hospital setting.
- Holds or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the area in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works.
- Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, including historical contexts which may influence Aboriginal health, and national and state policies/strategies relating to Aboriginal health.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities, and network with other services and health professionals.
- Knowledge of confidentiality, documentation and information management, relevant legislation, ethics and duty of care, and mandatory reporting requirements in an Aboriginal primary health care environment.
- Competent computer skills utilising varied and appropriate software programs (e.g. MS Word processing, data management systems and spreadsheets).
- Knowledge of quality improvement and experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families.
