About Us

The Primary Care and Community Health Unit consists of 9 centres that provide a range of services for children, young people and their families, adults, older people and their carers. Our services range from health promotion, prevention and early detection through to assessment, treatment and continuing care. Our staff work in partnership with schools, GPs, hospitals, non-government agencies and other organisations to provide care across our centres, in people’s homes, other community venues as well as virtual care (telehealth).

In this role, you will provide specialist therapeutic and case management services to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal adults and children who have experienced sexual assault, as well as support for their non-offending family members. Working within a trauma-informed framework, you will help promote safety, healing and recovery.
You will join a highly skilled and supportive sexual assault counselling team that provides crisis responses, ongoing counselling, community education and prevention initiatives. Our work is strengths-based, family-focused and culturally responsive, recognising the strengths and resilience of Aboriginal children, families and communities.
As the Aboriginal Sexual Assault Counsellor, you will build trusted relationships with Aboriginal clients, communities and partner organisations, while providing cultural consultation and guidance to non-Aboriginal clinicians to strengthen culturally safe service delivery. What you will bring to the role
- This position is identified for female Aboriginal applicants: This is an identified Aboriginal Position. Applicants must be of Aboriginal descent. Exemption is claimed under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. Aboriginal applicants must demonstrate Aboriginality in addition to addressing the Selection Criteria. Being female is recognized as a genuine occupation qualification for this position and is authorized under section 31(2h) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
- Applicants must hold one of the below eligible qualifications: a) Degree in Social Work from an accredited course providing eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers, or b) Psychology: General registration with the Psychology Board of Australia and, for Senior Psychologist, a current Senior Psychologist or eligible for Senior Psychologist grading (with no less than 12 months service at the 9th year of service and thereafter rate) and, for Clinical Psychologist, an accredited Masters or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology c) Minimum AQF level 7 qualification recognised or accredited by the Peak Body (PACFA) with eligibility for membership as a counsellor with PACFA; d) Sydney University's Aboriginal Qualification Pathway - Graduate Certificate in Human and Community Services (Interpersonal Trauma)
- Experience providing culturally appropriate trauma focused therapeutic supports for Aboriginal individuals and families in regards to sensitive issues
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to create Aboriginal community connections, engagement, and collaborations
- Demonstrated understanding of the intersection between issues of intergenerational trauma, colonisation, sexual assault, domestic violence and child protection
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a therapeutic team and to manage competing tasks in a busy service
- Current NSW Drivers Licence and ability to attend Nepean Hospital within 1 hour to participate in the 24/7 crisis on-call service
