What you’ll be doing

This position provides a unique stable opportunity for a Senior Resident Medical Officer to work in a 12-month full time position within the Paediatrics department at St George Hospital, gaining experience in the assessment and management of Paediatric patients in preparation for a career in General Practice.

Each day duties are spread between special care nursery, children’s ward, emergency, postnatal ward and the delivery suite.  The SRMO provides continuity to the paediatric team working day shifts Monday to Friday with supervision by the specialist paediatrician available in person in office hours and by phone after hours.

The role will include:

  •  Taking thorough paediatric medical histories and conducting comprehensive paediatric examinations

  • Developing skills in neonatal and paediatric resuscitation

  • Developing skills in stabilisation of seriously ill children and coordinating transfer to tertiary service

  • Performing common paediatric procedures, including venipuncture, LP and cannulation

  • Co-ordinating and documenting admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in the Emergency Department, Children’s ward or Special Care Nursery

  • Developing skills in coordinating complex case management of children with chronic illnesses

  • Performing child at risk assessments

  • Providing a family centred model of care, including to families who are culturally and linguistically diverse

  • Communicating effectively with patients, families, team members, other clinical teams

  • Demonstrating formal handover of care

  • Taking responsibility for follow up of investigations and actioning a management plan

  • Maintaining departmental databases to allow audit of practice

  • Actively contributing to team meetings and case presentations

  • Researching clinical questions using literature review and applying the information effectively to the clinical setting.

  • Undertaking Trainee shifts on occasion to relieve locally employed paediatric Trainees

  • Participating in medical student teaching and providing clinical support to rotating paediatric residents and trainees

  • Opportunity to join in outpatient clinic for management ADHD and other common neurodevelopmental concerns in preparation for co management in General Practice.

 

This position is not accredited with the RACP so will not count towards paediatric training. Applicants showing a commitment to GP training will be prioritised.

The paediatric department comprises a 16-bed general inpatient unit and a 12-bed level 4 special care nursery with the capacity to provide long term non-invasive ventilation and short-term invasive ventilation for babies down to 32 weeks gestation and 1.8kg birth-weight. Paediatric staff also support a separate 12-bed specialised Paediatric Emergency. St George Hospital is the high-risk obstetric unit for the Central Hospitals Network and the birthing service manages 2500 deliveries per year. There are 6 staff specialist paediatricians (3.5FTE) as well as an academic staff specialist (0.5FTE) within the department. The paediatric department refers to the Children's Hospital Network for tertiary cases unsuitable for management at St George Hospital.

Selection Criteria 

  1. MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Career path to demonstrate paediatric clinical skills development and commitment to general practice training.
  3. Previous experience working with children or newborns.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Aptitude for neonatal resuscitation.
  6. Demonstrated ability to make carefully considered clinical decisions, with ability to work to a higher level of clinical responsibility.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to GP training
  8. A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to work shift work, participate in after-hours overtime, on-call rosters.
