This new business unit will directly engage medical locums, reducing reliance on third-party agencies and improving cost control and overall system quality and will provide central management of this important workforce.

The Senior Policy and Legal Officer will lead the development of legal, industrial, and workplace relations policy frameworks for the new innovative business unit.
The role will manage and coordinate the development and implementation of a range of policy initiatives, provides expert legal, award and regulatory advice and contribute to the delivery of policy initiatives to support NSW Health, public sector and broader legislative requirements.
Health Manager Level 4, starting salary from $141,974 - $169,151, plus Superannuation, with a 38-hour work week.
What you’ll be doing
- Provide expert advice on workplace relations, employment law, award interpretation and contracting mechanisms to support the business unit’s establishment, governance framework and business processes.
- Negotiate new or revised employment frameworks, including enterprise agreements, position descriptions, contracts and policy instruments.
- Identify and address legal and industrial risks associated with locum workforce engagement.
- Liaise with key industrial stakeholders, including unions and public sector workforce agencies, to support the development of sustainable workforce models.
- Contribute to the design and execution of governance, credentialing and regulatory processes aligned to legal obligations.
- Work closely with legal and workforce policy teams to develop briefing notes, cabinet submissions and supporting documentation for high-level decision-making.
- Support the design and legal review of procurement or contractual arrangements.
- Monitor legislative and industrial changes that may impact on the design or implementation of the internal business unit.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, facilitate their engagement in, and contribution to, the identification and development of policy/process solutions and to inform policy decision making.
About you:
We are seeking motivated and committed individuals who can support the work of NSW Health with:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or significant experience.
- Sound knowledge of public sector governance, employment classifications and contractor management.
- Strong conceptual and analytical skills, with the ability to assess risk, develop policy and provide solutions to novel legal challenges.
