The Primary Care and Community Health Unit consists of 9 centres that provide a range of services for children, young people and their families, adults, older people and their carers. Our services range from health promotion, prevention and early detection through to assessment, treatment and continuing care. Our staff work in partnership with schools, GPs, hospitals, non-government agencies and other organisations to provide care across our centres, in people’s homes, other community venues as well as virtual care (telehealth).
The Aboriginal Safe Wayz Clinician is responsible for the provision of specialist therapeutic and case management services to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal adults, young people and children who have been sexually assaulted or who are under the age of 10 years with problematic harmful sexual behaviors. The role will also work with Aboriginal communities, organisations and relevant stakeholders to develop integrated prevention and response strategies.
This position will work with the Safe Wayz Coordinator to implement the Aboriginal Action Plan linked to the Safe Wayz Pathway for children under 10 with Problematic and Harmful Sexualised Behaviours.
This a multi-level role open to candidates with varying levels of experience who are committed to developing in this field. Professional development will be provided on working with PHSB so the applicants background can be more generalised in child and family work. The Aboriginal Safe Wayz Clinician will lead engagement with Aboriginal communities, stakeholders and clients; also providing cultural consultation to support non-Aboriginal clinicians working with First Nations children and families. The successful candidate will support cross-sector integrated care coordination for children under 10 with problematic harmful sexualised behaviours (PHSBs), their families and communities. Safe Wayz adopts a strength-based, family focussed and culturally centred trauma-informed approach to working with children and families. This role coordinates pathways into specialist counselling services for children and families who need them and will hold a small clinical case load.
The Safe Wayz Program also coordinates primary prevention initiatives to educate children, families, schools, carers, community and professionals about problematic & harmful sexual behaviours (PHSB) including guidance on developmentally appropriate sexual behaviours. This will involve building capacities to identify and understand PHSB, collaboration with agency partners, provision of consultation and training, whilst also advocating for system and practice changes.
This position also entails participation in the provision of a 24/7 crisis response service supporting Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District to provide integrated wellbeing focused psychosocial and medical responses to victims of sexual assault.

What you will bring to the role
- This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
- Applicants must hold one of the below eligible qualifications: a) Degree in Social Work from an accredited course providing eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers, or b) Psychology: General registration with the Psychology Board of Australia and, for Senior Psychologist, a current Senior Psychologist or eligible for Senior Psychologist grading (with no less than 12 months service at the 9th year of service and thereafter rate) and, for Clinical Psychologist, an accredited Masters or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology c) Counselling qualification with Bachelor, Master or Doctorate Degree in Counselling with current listing on ARCAP (Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists) and current membership of PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia)
- Experience providing culturally appropriate trauma focused therapeutic supports for Aboriginal individuals and families in regards to sensitive issues
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to create Aboriginal community connections, engagement, and collaborations
- Demonstrated understanding of the intersection between issues of intergenerational trauma, colonisation, sexual assault, domestic violence and child protection
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a therapeutic team and to manage competing tasks in a busy service.
- Current NSW Drivers Licence and ability to attend Nepean Hospital within 1 hour to participate in the 24/7 crisis on-call service
