About the role:

NSW Health aims to grow a dedicated and sustained Rural Generalist medical workforce to assist in improving access, quality, and sustainability of primary health care services for rural and remote communities.

Through the NSW Rural Generalist Single Employer Pathway (RGSEP), NSW Health provides a supported employment pathway for junior doctors wishing to pursue a career as a Rural Generalist. Rural Generalists are able to provide primary care in a general practice setting as well as advanced services and /or procedural skills in a rural hospital.

Whilst on a RGSEP length-of- training contract, Rural Generalist trainees will undertake learning and professional development activities with the aim of progressing through training to achieve at least one advanced skill and Fellowship of either the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) or the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners-Rural Generalist (RACGP-RG).

NSW Rural Generalist Single Employer Pathway (RGSEP)

This new employment model offers the junior doctor on the Rural Generalist pathway one contract for the length of GP college training (up to 4years) by the employing rural Local Health District (LHD), while completing training in primary care and hospital settings. Trainees will be engaged under existing NSW Awards and determinations.

Round 2 RGSEP opportunities are currently available in the following NSW Health LHD's: Far West, Hunter New England,  Illawarra Shoalhaven, Northern NSW,  and Western NSW. Opportunities also exist to work across both Central Coast and Far West LHD (RACGP only) as part of an employment arrangement with Far West LHD.

Whilst aligned to a central hospital within the LHD, the trainee may be required to perform their duties at peripheral or neighboring communities.

The RGSEP positions are suitable for doctors who are commencing Rural Generalist training, or those who have already completed some components of the GP training pathway. Length of contract (1-4years) will be determined by the trainee’s stage of GP training.

All RGSEP Rural Generalist trainees will also be enrolled in the Health Education and Training Institute’s (HETI) NSW Rural Generalist Medical Training Program (RGTP).
