Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the Visiting Medical Officer position in the Western Sydney Local Health District. This position will be primarily located at Westmead Hospital within the Department of Ophthalmology.

Successful applicants will be expected to participate in the Ophthalmology clinics, perform operative procedures required to an appropriate standard, be involved in the supervision of registrars and residents and be involved in teaching and education. 

Appointees may be eligible for credentialing and privileging across all other facilities in the Western Sydney Local Health District.

The Department of Ophthalmology at Westmead is a multidisciplinary service providing outpatient and inpatient assessment services, ophthalmic surgical services and community based chronic care management.  The multidisciplinary team is constructed of Medical, Nursing, Allied Health (Orthoptic), Administrative, Community based & Managerial staff to allow the service to be a successful high demand service seeing approximately 28,000 Outpatient occasions of service, 2,000 Surgical occasions of service and 700 Community based occasions of services per year.

The outpatient ophthalmology service sees patients with acute, chronic and emergency eye conditions.  The service performs routine and emergency eye surgery and offers a 24/7 on call system for Westmead Hospital.

The community based chronic eye care management clinic Community Eye Care (CEYEC) is an innovative collaborative model of care for assessment and management of chronic eye disease patients who do not meet the criteria to be seen in the acute setting of the hospital but require ongoing surveillance.

The service accepts external referrals from General Practitioners, Optometrists and Private Ophthalmologists and accepts internal referrals from other outpatient departments, emergency departments and offer consultation for inpatients.

Applicants must have Australian Fellowship/Specialist Registration.

This appointment is for the remainder of the current Quinquennium, until 30 June 2027.

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Health Services Act 1997 and Public Hospitals (Visiting Medical Officers Sessional Contracts) Determination 2014.

Selection Criteria

·         Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) or equivalent as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997

·         Sound clinical knowledge in Ophthalmology and Glaucoma surgery demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position

·       Demonstrated high level of interpersonal and communication skills and attitudes

·         Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied or clinical research within the Department.

·         Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based practice

·      Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision
