What you’ll be doing
The Provisional Fellow (PF) position in Anaesthesia at St George Hospital is structured to allow trainees to practise at a more senior level, and in addition to elective and emergency clinical anaesthesia, PF’s can be involved in the teaching and supervision of junior trainees, research, quality assurance activities and departmental administration.
The year is designed as a bridge to consultant practice with the following opportunities:
1. Gain experience at a more senior level in the provision of anaesthesia, with the goal of achieving independent practice
2. During the year, there are opportunities to follow your own interests in both clinical and non-clinical pursuits, or also to stream into an ANZCA accredited fellowship in:
· Airway Anaesthesia
· Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine*
· Obstetric Anaesthesia*
· Simulation
· Trauma and Regional Anaesthesia
(*ANZCA accreditation pending)
3. All provisional fellows will gain further clinical experience in a range of subspecialty anaesthesia including trauma, major oncological surgery, cardiothoracics, obstetrics and education.
4. All provisional fellows will gain experience in the management of the operating suite and in surgical triage as the Duty Anaesthetist.
The case mix includes the following surgical specialties – cardiothoracic, vascular, orthopaedic, obstetrics/ gynaecology, neurosurgery, trauma, gynaecology, plastics, ear/nose/ throat, maxillofacial, urologic, breast/ endocrine, and some paediatric surgery. Most elective orthopaedic, hand and ophthalmic surgery is not performed at St George. The Department also provides services for cardiology, radiology, MRI and the endoscopy suite.

Selection Criteria
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Completion of at least four years of anaesthetic training.
- Final examination successfully completed or currently sitting, or at an equivalent stage of training.
- The ability to work in a complex clinical environment.
- Demonstrated teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills in the clinical setting.
- An interest in undertaking research, teaching/simulation.
- Previous teaching or research experience.
