Special Position Information
Neonatal hemodynamic training during this fellowship includes hands-on instruction in ultrasound physics, advanced image acquisition, and measurement analysis, including tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) and strain imaging. Fellows are trained using standardized scanning and measurement protocols specifically designed for critically ill and premature infants.
Weekly teaching sessions focus on developing hemodynamic integration skills — the ability to combine echocardiographic findings with clinical physiology to support individualized patient management.
Applicants are expected to be proficient in basic cardiac image acquisition, including the five standard cardiac views. Completion of, or substantial progress toward, ASUM neonatal cardiac ultrasound training is highly recommended.
Where you'll be working
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at John Hunter Children’s Hospital in beautiful Newcastle is one of the largest and busiest NICUs in NSW, and the only tertiary neonatal service outside of Sydney. This 44-bed, state-of-the-art unit provides intensive medical and surgical care for newborns across the Hunter New England and Mid North Coast regions. You will join a dynamic, highly skilled multidisciplinary team that values collaboration, respect, and open communication, and is deeply committed to excellence in evidence-based, family-centred care. The unit fosters a supportive, inclusive culture with a strong focus on teamwork, professional development, and delivering the best possible outcomes for babies and their families.
What you'll be doing
The Provisional Fellow is expected to provide expertise in the management of neonates with complex health problems, be adept in managing the care in the context of the individual family and locally available community support structures. Diagnosis of complex perinatal medicine whilst enhancing clinical experience in procedural, management and investigation skills, tertiary perinatal medicine including exposure to neonatal surgical, neonatal transport and other subspecialty services.
The role will be given protected research, education time and there may be opportunities to rotate through retrieval and other services to fulfil training requirements, including developmental and outpatient perinatal experience. Participate in after-hours rosters including nights and weekends OR Participate in a 24/7 roster and may be rostered today, evening or night shifts across a seven-day roster. Working in a brand-new state of the art unit from September 2026.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- 5 years post-graduate experience with a minimum of 12 months experience in Neonatal Intensive Care.
- Commitment to and requirement for further training in Neonatal Intensive Care.
- Demonstrated confidence and ability to function independently as first on-call.
- Demonstrated procedural, communication, team work and decision making skills.
- Demonstrated teaching ability and commitment to teaching and supervision of junior medical and other clinical staff
- Experience in or demonstrated interest in research.
