Where you’ll be working

The vision for South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) is ‘exceptional care, healthier lives’. SESLHD is committed to enabling our community to be healthy and well, and to providing the best possible compassionate care when people need it.

Prince of Wales Hospital and Community Health Services is a major teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre, providing excellent healthcare to south-eastern Sydney and specialist health and medical services to NSW.

We have 450 inpatient beds and almost 3,000 staff. Each year we care for more than 60,000 patients in our Emergency Department and have around 50,000 admissions to the inpatient units of our hospital. We also have a busy outpatient service and rural outreach service and provide more than 900,000 occasions of non-admitted patient care each year.

Our hospital is affiliated with various Universities and premier medical teaching facilities which enables our staff to provide excellence in healthcare in conjunction with our commitment to quality clinical teaching and leading medical research.

What you'll be doing

To provide effective clinical management of patients, under appropriate supervision by Attending Medical Officers (AMOs), including patient assessment, making treatment decisions, performing procedures and maintaining adequate medical records; and to develop expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. This includes supervised general medical management of patients admitted to specialist departments.

This clinical position is available to either advanced trainees of the College of Physicians in Paediatrics, Adult Medicine or other recognised colleges. These positions can be recognised for Advanced Training in Clinical Genetics (non-core), Medical Oncology (non-core) or Cancer Genetics (core). There is 1 full time position. You may be allocated to POWH Hereditary Cancer Centre and Royal Prince Alfred Cancer Genetics OR a position shared between Westmead Familial Cancer Service and Royal North Shore Hospital Familial Cancer Service. Both positions also have outreach clinics via video conference.

The successful applicant will be involved in adult cancer genetics, paediatric cancer genetics, endocrine genetics clinics, high risk breast clinics, possibly neurofibromatosis clinic and inpatient consultations. Genetics fellows participate in activities of the NSW and Australian clinical genetics and cancer genetics intercampus educational programs. Participation in teaching other junior staff is encouraged. Opportunities exist for some clinical research within these positions, subject to availability.

The position provides trainees with immersive, supported learning of the basic principles of clinical cancer genetics, cancer syndrome diagnosis and management, molecular tumour boards and subspecialty multidisciplinary meeting participation, genetic testing, counselling and ethical issues relevant to both cancer genetics and broader genetic practice. It will provide the applicant with a unique opportunity to become familiar with the application and interpretation of new genomic testing techniques.

The Provisional Fellow position provides advanced trainees an opportunity to further their training, developing skills important for a consultant role in the spheres of clinical care, education and training as well as research with support from the team consultants and other health care professionals. The provisional fellow role is a leadership role both within the department for other junior medical staff and medical students as well as members of the multidisciplinary team but also across the broader hospital community.
