This is temporary part time position working 16 hours per week. It is expected that the successful applicant will contribute to departmental research through the management of clinical trials and other research projects or audit, under appropriate guidance. It would suit a person wishing to develop a specialist interest in IBD beyond that acquired through general gastroenterology training.

The role of the position will include the specialist inflammatory bowel disease clinic as well as general gastroenterology. It is expected that the successful applicant will contribute to departmental research through the management of clinical trials and other research projects or audit, under appropriate guidance. It would suit a person wishing to develop a specialist interest in IBD beyond that acquired through general gastroenterology training.
The IBD Service is consultant led who have a major interest in inflammatory bowel disease. This service was established in 2009 and over 1200 patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis have been treated. The unit is actively involved in numerous sponsored clinical trials, local investigator led and collaborative studies. There is an established intestinal ultrasound service with 4 GENIUS accredited consultants, with the opportunity for training in bowel ultrasound. The successful candidate will have exposure to both outpatient and inpatient care of IBD patients.
The post is a 12 month appointment by the Gastroenterology Department at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney.
Specific roles for the IBD Fellow will be daily ward rounds of all IBD inpatients, IBD consultations and any IBD presentations to the emergency department. A weekly teaching consultant ward round will occur however the fellow will be expected to communicate any issues with the IBD consultant on a daily basis.
A daily/second daily meeting with the IBD nurse to discuss any questions, changes in management and scheduling of appointments and infusions. Patients will be able to contact the IBD Fellow through the hospital switch board (within working hours) to obtain advice and organise further follow up. The IBD Fellow should assist with patient education on immunosuppressants, biological agents and vaccination requirements. The IBD Fellow will need to be available to the infusion centre in case of any infusion reactions. The IBD fellow should also be in regular contact with the surgical teams regarding any patients with IBD.
One to two consultant supervised endoscopy lists per week will be available to the successful candidate.
The successful applicant may also participate in the Senior on Wards on call roster
