Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the Staff Specialist position in the Western Sydney Local Health District. This position will be primarily located at Westmead Hospital within the Department of Trauma Surgery.

 

The Trauma Service has developed Westmead Hospital into one of the best performing major trauma centres in NSW. This is largely due to the dedicated, consultant-led model of care. Trauma surgery has continued to evolve into a subspecialty, where optimal surgical care can only be provided by appropriately trained and dedicated subspecialists. Westmead Hospital is the Major Trauma Centre for the Local Health District, as well as western NSW.

 

The Trauma Service admits approximately 1500 patients per year. In addition to the clinical role, it also has a robust trauma education, quality improvement and research program.

 

The successful applicant will have specialist expertise in trauma surgery as evidenced by completion of post-fellowship training.

Applicants must have Australian Fellowship/Specialist Registration at time of applying.

 

 

Successful applicants may be offered a conjoint university appointment within the Faculty of Medicine at the relevant University attached to each facility. The level of academic appointment will be commensurate with the qualifications, experience and scholarship and will be held only during the tenure of the Western Sydney Local Health District appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to the District for clinical matters.

 

Essential Requirements for Appointment

1.    Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency. Must hold a current NSW Environment Protection Authority license (if applicable)

2.    Sound clinical knowledge in trauma surgery demonstrated   through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position

3.    Evidence of post-fellowship training completion in trauma surgery at a recognised major trauma centre

 

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

 

Selection Criteria

1.    Qualifications and credentials required for core scope of practice in the specialty.

2.    Evidence of additional qualifications, skills and/or experience required for specific scope of practice for the specialty

3.    Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:

·       Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.

·       Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.

·       Excellent organisational, supervision and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships.

·       Maintaining and developing knowledge, skills and professional performance to the level required for contemporary practice.

·       Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and translation of research into practice to improve patient safety and quality.

4.    Demonstrated ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system.

5.    Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by:

·      Systems thinking and risk-taking aptitude.

·      commitment to self -care and personal development.

·      Capacity to maintain personal integrity, tolerate stress and demonstrate resilience.

·      Commitment to building relationships, leading, and developing others.

6.    Commitment to good governance, achieving results and managing risks

7.    Demonstrated commitment to Education, Training and Research, as applicable to the position

8.    Evidence of post-fellowship training in trauma surgery at a recognised major trauma centre
