This opportunity exists for a Consumer Peer Worker to join the Liverpool Hospital Consumer Peer Worker team. Our team has a strong commitment and focus on providing recovery-orientated, trauma informed & innovative approaches to supporting consumers during a hospital admission.

As part of our team, you will work collaboratively with consumers, members of the multidisciplinary team and external stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes with consumers. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the Peer Worker will  be responsible for providing peer led interventions.  Support and intervention will include individual and groups, advocating for consumers and may include involvement in committees and working parties to ensure peer views are incorporated at all levels of the mental health service. The Peer Worker role is part of a larger multidisciplinary mental health recovery team.

The successful candidate will work with adult mental health consumers admitted to Liverpool Hospital. The successful candidate will deliver peer support and advocate on behalf of consumers and promote the concepts of social inclusion and recovery by drawing on their personal lived experience with a mental health issue and provide recovery oriented education, support and advocacy to consumers, carers, and multidisciplinary staff across the district.

What You'll be Doing
As a Peer Support Worker you will provide peer supported transfer of care in the receovery of consumers who are transitioning from an acute inpatient unit to the community setting. This role is responsible for providing support that facilitates a consumer recovery journey, assists individuals in navigating the mental health system, accessing external supports and provides opportunity for peer learning.
Provide recovery orientated, evidence based peer support interventions to mental health consumers within a multidisciplinary team framework.  This position also supports clinical staff in the provision of recovery orientated and consumer driven clinical practice by providing consultation in relation to the experience of living with a mental health disorder. The Peer Worker is also responsible for undertaking designated administrative tasks necessary to support service delivery.

  1. Recognised Degree or other qualification deemed appropriate by the employer. Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or willingness to complete.
  2. Personal lived experience of a mental illness, with willingness and demonstrated ability to utilise the lived experience, the values of peer support and the consumer/survivor/ex-patient movement to support others in their own mental health recovery journey.
  3. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within the multi-disciplinary team and with a diverse range of stakeholders including service users, families and service providers.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  5. Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate empathically, supportively, and effectively with consumers, carers and colleagues.
  6. Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
