Hunter New England Local Health District is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Patient Safety Officer to join the Clinical Governance Patient Safety Team, based at John Hunter Hospital. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to patient safety and quality outcomes within Maternity services, Children, Young People and Families, and across district Integrated Care Networks and Partnerships.

About the Team

Clinical Governance at HNELHD comprises three key portfolios: Patient Safety, Quality Systems, and Health Improvement. You will be part of the Patient Safety Team, working collaboratively with clinical and operational staff to support safe, high-quality care across the district

About the role

As a Patient Safety Officer, you will coordinate, monitor, investigate and evaluate patient safety activities relating to incident management and mortality reviews. You will support Clinical Governance and operational teams to achieve patient safety objectives through data analysis, reporting, education and leadership of Serious Adverse Event Reviews (SAERs).

  • Coordinating and analysing incident and mortality data using systems such as ims+, QARS, MaternityIQ, and HACS
  • Preparing regular patient safety reports and presentations for key stakeholders
  • Leading Serious Adverse Event Reviews (SAERs) and supporting high-quality report development
  • Delivering education and training in incident management and the HNE Health Patient Safety and Quality Framework
  • Supporting managers and clinical teams to manage adverse events effectively
  • Undertaking death audits and monitoring implementation of SAER recommendations


About You

You are a highly motivated and organised health professional with a passion for patient safety and quality improvement. You bring:

  • A tertiary qualification in a health discipline or extensive recent clinical experience in a maternity setting
  • Demonstrated experience in incident management, data analysis and reporting
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to consult, negotiate and build effective relationships across professional boundaries
  • Proven time management skills and the ability to work with initiative and minimal supervision
  • Capability across a range of computer applications, including Microsoft Office and quality improvement systems
