SWSLHD Mental Health Service is recruiting for a Nurse Unit Manager (Level 3) position to complement and enhance the Banks House Acute Mental Health Unit located on the grounds of Bankstown Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic and collaborative multidisciplinary team with a strong commitment to safety, consumer advocacy and recovery focused mental health care. As the NUM3, you will have the opportunity to provide expert nursing clinical and managerial leadership in the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives and innovative models of care that is inclusive of family and/or carers in supporting each consumer towards their recovery. 

The Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) is in-charge of all aspects of the unit environment and takes overall responsibility for the standard of patient care in the unit. The NUM is pivotal to the coordination of patient care, unit management and leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care and efficient use of resources. Are You the Right Fit? 
The candidate would be a suitable fit for the advertised position if they hold current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA and have an approved postgraduate qualification in Mental Health Nursing, or other qualifications and experience deemed appropriate by the organisation. The candidate should demonstrate strong expertise in mental health nursing, including the ability to provide safe, compassionate, culturally responsive and evidence-based care, together with a high level of critical thinking and clinical decision-making. They should also demonstrate strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, the ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders, and a sound understanding of clinical governance, ethical practice and confidentiality. The role requires a high level of emotional intelligence, including empathy, self-awareness and the ability to manage sensitive situations calmly and professionally, as well as resilience and composure when working in high-stress or crisis situations. Leadership capability, the ability to lead by example, inspire confidence and support best-practice mental health care are also essential to the role. 

 

Selection Criteria 
To help us assess your suitability for the role, please tell us as much as you can about yourself in response to the questions below. 

  • Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent work experience or a combination of study and experience deemed appropriate by SWSLHD
  • Describe a time when you led a mental health unit through a period of high demand or significant operational change. How did you manage staffing, patient flow, and available resources to maintain safe, high-quality patient care while meeting service demands? What were the outcomes of your actions?
  • Provide an example of a quality, safety, or performance issue you identified within a team you have led. Describe how you used critical thinking to manage the situation, address any staff or stakeholder concerns , implement improvements, and evaluate the outcome.
