South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) is seeking an experienced and dedicated Nurse Manager Staffing & allocation to join our senior Nursing leadership team at Mental Health Service SWSLHD.

This permanent full-time position offers a unique opportunity to lead the daily coordination and deployment of nursing staff, ensuring safe, effective, and equitable coverage across a complex and fast-paced clinical environment. Reporting to the Nurse Manager Workforce, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining responsive and efficient staffing across the inpatient mental health service. Working in close collaboration with the broader Nursing leadership team, you will ensure effective daily operations and staffing solutions aligned to clinical needs, skill mix, and compliance with NHPPD and Like-for-Like requirements. You will manage the casual pool, lead recruitment efforts, and provide professional development, performance management, and leadership for casual nursing workforce. Collaborating closely with Nurse Unit Managers, shift In-charges, and executive nursing leadership, you will help drive improvements in workforce sustainability, service responsiveness, and patient care outcomes. You will also provide critical data and reporting on casual usage, overtime, and FTEs to inform workforce planning and continuous improvement initiatives.

Where You'll Be Working
SWSLHD Inpatient Mental Health Services provide comprehensive care across several facilities, including the newly redeveloped Campbelltown Hospital and Liverpool Hospital. These services offer a safe and therapeutic environment for individuals with acute and non-acute mental health needs.

The multidisciplinary teams, consisting of professionals with diverse mental health expertise, deliver exceptional care through specialised units such as the Mental Health Intensive Care Unit, Adult Acute Unit, and Older People's Mental Health Unit. The service is committed to patient safety and high-quality care, maintaining external accreditation with the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards.

  1. Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent work experience or a combination of study and experience deemed appropriate by SWSLHD.
  2. Describe a time when you had to make real-time staffing decisions to address critical clinical needs or unexpected absences? How did you prioritise competing demands, and what was the outcome?
  3. Demonstrate your experience with monitoring and managing Nursing Hours Per Patient Day (NHPPD)? How have you applied NHPPD principles to ensure appropriate staffing allocation, and how do you address situations where compliance may be at risk.
  4. Provide an example of a time when you acted as a resource person for nursing staff or colleagues? How did you use your communication skills to provide guidance, build trust, and ensure clarity in a challenging or high-pressure situation?
  5. Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
