Where you'll be working
 Macquarie Hospital is a 195 bed facility comprised of 9 separate units, 8 of which are medium to long stay. The primary purpose of the position is for the clinical management and leadership of the Frail and Older Peoples Mental Health stream which is comprised of Hamilton Hostel and Lavender unit. 
 

About the Role

Hamilton Hostel caters for older consumers and those with co-morbid physical health issues or issues related to premature aging, and provides a structured, contained environment, with the ultimate goal of facilitating consumer progress to a less restrictive environment. The unit provides diverse functions, including medical management, psychosocial rehabilitation, symptom stabilisation and reduction. The unit offers extended care. Consumers attend unit programs and hospital rehabilitation programs. 
Lavender House generally accepts people who have been living with mental illness, often treatment resistant, for many years. Many require physical assistance with aspects of self-care, due to the symptoms of their mental illness and their co-morbid conditions. Consumers are discharged from Lavender House when they reach their optimal level of functioning and if suitable accommodation is available, typically to aged care facilities and other specialist care options. The clinical team strive to provide a comfortable, contained environment which is conducive to the achievement of realistic outcomes. Activity program and recreational outings are available and consumers attend hospital Rehabilitation Programs.

 

Purpose of the Position

Provision of clinical consultation services within NSLHD and contribution to the teaching and training of medical officers, students, graduates and other health care professionals and to research, evaluation and quality improvement activities. 
Participation in the on-call roster as directed by the Clinical Director. Human Resources management. Financial management and consideration of the hospital budget when prescribing and ordering tests/treatments. Show capacity for warmth, empathy and sensitivity whilst interacting with consumers. 

The position will provide clinical management and treatment of consumers under your care in a Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) facility or service. 

This care will be provided within the scope of practice endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC). 
 

Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the FRANZCP or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within 3 months may be considered. Specialist IMG (overseas trained Psychiatrists) might be considered if they are successful in obtaining Substantial Comparability Status with the RANZCP's specialist pathway.
  2. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  3. Experience in treating serious mental illness and working within a team to promote rehabilitation and recovery with a strong interest and/or qualifications in frail and older peoples mental health.
  4. Demonstrated capacity to provide effective clinical leadership within multidisciplinary teams.
  5. Communication skills of a high order, including those of negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution.
  6. Proven high performance as an experienced clinician and willingness to participate in an on-call roster and provide leadership and support to junior medical staff and participate in regular doctors' meetings.
  7. Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act 2007, Guardianship Act 1987 and its application and commitment to State, National and Local Mental Health policy.
  8. NSW Drivers Licence and the ability to drive.
