Where you'll be working

Sutherland Hospital is a level 5 teaching hospital located in the suburb of Caringbah, 30 minutes from the Sydney CBD. Sutherland Emergency Department sees approximately 60,000 patients per year including approximately 25% paediatric patients. The Emergency Department is an accredited Advanced Emergency Medicine Training facility by the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM).

The Department offers comprehensive emergency nursing training and support program, with a dedicated Clinical Nurse Consultant and Clinical Nurse Educators to support ongoing professional development. Sutherland Hospital has opened a brand new state of the art Emergency Department on 6 December 2017. The new Department has a total of 39 funded treatment bays, including three resuscitation bays, a dedicated 7 bed paediatric and fast track area and an 8 bed emergency short stay unit.

Safe Staffing target for The Sutherland Hospital was received in March 2025. This recruitment is to build on the current dynamic workforce that services our community.

What you'll be doing

The Emergency Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides readily available access to high level clinical expertise and support for Emergency Department. 
The Nurse Practitioner's extended practice role includes, comprehensive assessment, interpretation of diagnostics, implementation of treatment modalities and relevant referral skills applied to a broad range of challenging, complex and changing situations within the Emergency Department 


The ideal candidate will have:

  1. Registered Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia including endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner or working towards same as per the NMBA Guidelines on endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner.
  2. Post graduate qualifications at Masters level, in a NMBA approved program of study or relevant clinical specialty, or working towards
  3. Demonstrated high level knowledge and advanced clinical nursing skills including comprehensive assessment, interpretation of diagnostics, implementation of treatment modalities and relevant referral skills applied to a broad range of challenging, complex and changing situations.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of the Emergency care delivery system and ability to lead and implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the initiation, utilisation and review of evidence based research
  5. Proven high level knowledge and expertise in complex client centred consultancy, practice development activities including mentoring, education, active participation in communities of practice, policy development and quality improvement.
  6. Demonstrated advanced clinical leadership role, negotiation, liaison, interpersonal and problem solving skills across the Emergency Department
  7. Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and accountability while also working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and multi service environment.
