Shape the Future of Maternity Care in Northern NSW

Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) delivers public healthcare to more than 300,000 residents across 20,732 km² from Tweed Heads to Grafton. NNSWLHD serves a diverse and growing community—including 5.2% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples—and is investing in major capital projects, ICT and integrated care to improve outcomes. With over 5,500 staff and strong training partnerships, NNSWLHD offers state-of-the-art facilities with access to both general and specialist services.

The Opportunity

NNSWLHD is seeking a FRANZCOG-accredited Obstetrician & Gynaecologist to take on the pivotal role of Medical Lead – Maternity Clinical Stream.

This is a strategic leadership position, accountable for shaping governance, driving quality improvement, and fostering cultural change across maternity and women’s health services district-wide. It is a rare opportunity to influence care models and outcomes at a system level, while retaining the option to balance the role with clinical practice.

The Medical Lead will provide district-wide clinical governance and strategic leadership for maternity services, working in partnership with the District Manager of Midwifery Services and reporting directly to the Executive Director of Medical Services and Clinical Governance.

  • Strategic, not operational – guiding quality frameworks, policy development, and service redesign rather than day-to-day management.
  • District-wide scope – Tweed Valley, Lismore, Grafton and small units – each with unique challenges and opportunities.
  • Data-driven quality improvement – turning safety and performance metrics into practical, clinician-led improvements.
  • Change leadership – fostering collaboration between medical and midwifery staff and engaging with communities to support sustainable reform.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic clinical leadership and advice in line with the NSW Maternity & Neonatal Service Capability Framework and Tiered Perinatal Network arrangements.
  • Lead the development of district-wide policies, frameworks, and governance structures for maternity and women’s health.
  • Translate safety and quality data into meaningful clinical change.
  • Guide service planning, role delineation, and future service viability across district hospitals.
  • Act as a change agent, strengthening culture and building multidisciplinary collaboration across medical and midwifery teams.

About You

You will be a strategic, collaborative, and data-informed leader with:

  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG).
  • Registration (or eligibility) with the Medical Board of Australia/AHPRA.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical governance, quality improvement, and safety initiatives.
  • A proven ability to lead by influence, managing sensitive relationships across medical, midwifery, executive, and community stakeholders.
  • Commitment to building culture, driving change, and improving outcomes at scale.

Why Join NNSWLHD?

  • A strategic leadership role shaping maternity and women’s health services across a major regional health district.
  • Balance governance with ongoing clinical practice.
  • Influence service redesign, policy, and quality outcomes at a district-wide level.
  • Be part of an organisation investing in innovation and cultural change.
  • Enjoy the lifestyle benefits of Northern NSW – Tweed Coast, Byron Bay, Northern Rivers, and Clarence Valley.

  1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways. Current substantive appointment as a Senior Medical Practitioner (Staff Specialist, Visiting Medical Officer) in Obstetrics
  2. Experience in the management, planning and development of clinical services
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary, evidence-based practice and procedures
  4. Demonstrated ability to provide effective clinical leadership, and assist in the management of the clinical resources of a service
  5. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement principles, and ability to ensure the provision of high-quality clinical services across the health service
  6. Demonstrated ability to assist in the leadership of a multidisciplinary team in the context of the District Clinical Service arrangements and the TPN as per the Maternity and Newborn Service capability arrangements
  7. Demonstrated excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills with proven ability to effectively engage in multidisciplinary team working, including the promotion of reflective practice
  8. Valid unrestricted drivers' licence for use in NSW/Australia and willingness to travel in the course of employment. The ability and willingness to work set days each fortnight in line with required meeting attendance and in line with LHD requirements.
