An exciting opportunity is available for a committed and enthusiastic Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the expanding Child Youth and Family Mental Health (CYF-MH) stream in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD). This role is available in the newly established Youth Mental Health Initiative (YMHI). YMHI is a bilateral agreement between the Commonwealth and NSW Governments which aims to improve mental health outcomes for young people who present to headspace with complex and moderate-severe mental health issues. YMHI will be comprised of psychiatry and senior mental health clinicians, and will support the headspaces in Penrith, Hawkesbury, Katoomba and Lithgow in providing comprehensive, coordinated, consumer-focused and compassionate care to young people.

Applicants who expect to be eligible for Fellowship within 6 months and who have no more than one College-administered assessment to complete may be considered; if successful, the applicant will not be subsequently eligible to commence their appointment until after the relevant qualifications and requirements are formally completed.

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist will provide medical leadership within the interdisciplinary team. They will support the development of the model of care and building of partnerships, provide mental health consultation, assessments and management for young people, empower families and care networks, and participate in key clinical decisions. The role provides the opportunity to develop, deliver and evaluate innovative care for young people and their care networks.

YMHI is a welcomed addition to the well-established interdisciplinary Child Youth and Family Mental Health stream, with the portfolio including Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Safeguards, Whole Family Team, Got IT! and Perinatal Infant Mental Health. The new inpatient Nepean Adolescent Mental Health Unit (NAMHU) will soon be opening, and a Medicare Kids Hub will also become operational in 2026.
