Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical/dental practitioners for the above position (s) in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. The position will be primarily located at Nepean Hospital within the Department of Emergency.
Successful applicants will be highly motivated and competent emergency physicians.
Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship by the beginning of the 2025 Clinical Year will be considered. If successful, the applicant will not be subsequently eligible to commence their appointment until after the relevant qualifications and requirements are formally obtained.
The number of sessions will be as required by the department.
The ED Ultrasound Fellow will work as a senior clinician in the emergency department while learning and mastering ultrasound skills.
It is a full-time position with an equal split for ultrasound and emergency medicine, 0.5FTE Ultrasound and 0.5FTE Emergency Medicine. It is a temporary full-time position for 12 months. The Post Graduate Fellow will provide expert medical assessment and management of patients within the Emergency Department. The position will be split between 0.5FTE (20hrs per week) in Emergency Ultrasound, database management and administration and ultrasound research, and 0.5FTE (20hrs per week) in Clinical Emergency Medicine.
0.5 FTE Ultrasound Fellow position:
Within this ultrasound portion of the position, the fellow will be provided with adequate advanced ultrasound teaching sessions and dedicated hands-on training sessions to learn and improve ultrasound skills, to the standard expected with DDU candidates. The fellow is expected to be actively involved in other ED ultrasound teaching activities and ultrasound educational sessions conducted by ICU, O&G and Radiology department. It is expected that the fellow will complete Module 2 of the Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (DDU) or a significant proportion thereof, during these 12 months.
The Ultrasound Fellow will provide expert support to the Emergency Department in the provision of point of care ultrasound (POCUS). The fellow will provide an ED clinical ultrasound service, to aid early decision-making and timely patient care, improve patient flow, perform ultrasound-guided procedures in ED. Ultrasound fellow will provide supervision of the ultrasound registrars, provide teaching to the emergency department staff and medical students. It is mandatory that the US fellow undertake Ultrasound-related research, manage the ultrasound database and participate in departmental ultrasound QI projects and meetings.
0.5 FTE Emergency Medicine Fellow position:
The Emergency Medicine component of the position will require the fellow to participate in the Emergency Medicine consultant clinical roster at 0.5 FTE. The incumbent is expected to provide an adequate assessment and management of patients presented to the Emergency Department, supervise junior medical officers and registrars, and liaise with other medical and surgical teams regarding Emergency patients.
The Nepean Hospital is a tertiary referral hospital with affiliation to the University of Sydney. The Nepean Emergency Department sees approximately 72 000 presentations per year and is the tertiary referral hospital for the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. The department is a well-equipped purpose-built facility with an adjacent short stay unit providing world standard emergency care for a diverse case mix including paediatric patients. It is well supported by multi-specialty services including 24/7 Interventional Cardiology, Haematology, Trauma services, Neurosurgery, Thoracic Surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Paediatrics, Geriatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The emergency department has ACEM accreditation for a special skills position in ultrasound for two trainees.

Selection Criteria
1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
2. Possess Fellowship of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) as provided for by the Health Insurance Act 1997, and Staff Specialist (State) Award.
3. Proven capacity and experience in the provision of effective, high-quality Emergency Medicine Care demonstrated through successful clinical practice in a tertiary emergency department setting.
4. Currently enrolled or is willing to enrol in a Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (DDU). Must be registered with ASUM (Australasian Society for Ultrasound Medicine) and preferably completed at least 2 CCPU (Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound) modules. Proven capacity and experience in the provision Point of care Emergency ultrasound.
5. Demonstrates the skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner, including modelling of a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff. High level interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and to work as a productive member of the clinical team across multiple sites. Willingness to work a rotating roster including after-hours shifts.
6. Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
7. Evidence of participation in quality assurance activities relevant to the specialty of Emergency Medicine. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students and other staff of the hospital.
8. Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to undertake basic, applied or clinical research as required within the department, preferable related to ultrasound in emergency medicine.
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Health Services Act 1997, and Staff Specialists (State) Award.
