Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for a postgraduate fellowship combining advanced emergency ultrasound training with senior clinical work in the Emergency Department. The position is part-time (0.50 FTE), temporary for 12 months. The position will be primarily located at Nepean Hospital within the Department of Emergency.
Successful applicants will be highly motivated and competent emergency physicians.
Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship by mid-2026 will be considered. Appointment cannot commence until qualifications are formally obtained.
About Nepean Emergency Ultrasound
Nepean Hospital is a tertiary referral centre affiliated with the University of Sydney. The Emergency Department sees approximately 90,000 presentations per year. The department is a well-equipped purpose-built facility with an adjacent short stay unit providing world standard emergency care for a diverse case mix including paediatric patients. It is well supported by multi-specialty services including 24/7 Interventional Cardiology, Haematology, Trauma services, Neurosurgery, Thoracic Surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Paediatrics, Geriatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The Nepean Emergency Ultrasound (NEDUS) program is among the most well-resourced emergency ultrasound programs in Australia. The department is equipped with high-end ultrasound machines and dedicated high-level disinfection (HLD) units, supporting a broad range of diagnostic and procedural applications. The program features a purpose-built reporting system with eMR integration, ensuring seamless documentation and quality assurance across all scans.
NEDUS maintains close collaborative relationships with the ICU and O&G departments. The program is ACEM-accredited for two ultrasound special skills TL4 positions and delivers regular ultrasound teaching to the University of Sydney’s clinical medical school. The department has a strong track record of published ED US research and currently supports multiple ongoing projects, offering the fellow a genuine opportunity to contribute and be mentored within an active research culture. The program also regularly participates in state, national and international ultrasound workshops, reflecting its standing as a leading emergency ultrasound centre.

Role Overview
Component 1 – Emergency Ultrasound Fellow (0.25FTE)
· Advanced ultrasound training toward completion of DDU Module 2, supervised by two DDU-accredited emergency physicians.
· POCUS clinical service supporting early decision-making, patient flow and ultrasound-guided procedures in the ED.
· Teaching ED staff, registrars and medical students; cross-departmental teaching with ICU and O&G.
· Mandatory involvement in ultrasound-related research, department database management and QI/QA projects and meetings.
Component 2 – Emergency Medicine Consultant (0.25FTE)
· Participation in the Emergency Medicine consultant clinical roster, including after-hours shifts.
· Expert assessment and management of ED patients.
· Supervision of junior medical officers and registrars.
· Liaison with multidisciplinary teams across NBMLHD.
Selection Criteria
1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
2. Possess Fellowship of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEM) as provided for by the Health Insurance Act 1997, and Staff Specialist (State) Award.
3. Proven capacity and experience in the provision of effective, high-quality Emergency Medicine Care demonstrated through successful clinical practice in a tertiary emergency department setting, and evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
4. Enrolled in or willing to enroll in a Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (DDU). Holds multiple Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound’s (CCPU), at minimum EFAST, AAA and FELS/RCE, or equivalent credentials. Additional modules are highly regarded.
5. Professional conduct and clinical standards consistent with a Senior Medical Practitioner, including modelling appropriate behaviour for junior staff. Advanced communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work across multidisciplinary teams and multiple clinical sites.
6. Availability to work a rotating roster, including after-hours shifts.
7. Evidence of continuing medical education and self- audit practices aligned with the scope of practice requirements of the position. Active participation in ED quality assurance activities. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students and other staff of the hospital.
8. Familiarity with research methodology and willingness to undertake basic, applied or clinical research as required within the department, related to ultrasound in emergency medicine. Published work or other relevant scholarly activity will be viewed favourable.
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Health Services Act 1997, and Staff Specialists (State) Award.
