The role
The MotherSafe counsellor group is a small multidisciplinary team, with work performed both independently and collaboratively. Specialised training for the position is provided. Some WFH will be considered once demonstrated competence is achieved. .
Job share applications for a portion of the available hours are encouraged.

The main duty of the telephone counsellor is to answer incoming calls to MotherSafe from both consumers and health care professionals. The counsellor details each call in a computer Access database. It is the counsellor's responsibility to ensure that data collection is complete and that the data obtained from each telephone occasion of service is entered into the MotherSafe database.
The counsellor’s main job is to provide up-to-date evidence based information and counselling to callers regarding exposures during a current (or future) pregnancy and breastfeeding. Counsellors need to be able to access information and synthesis it and deliver it to callers in a professional and compassionate manner.
Other duties include obtaining updated information on exposures from drug companies and other sources; ensuring that updated exposure information is kept on file in the MotherSafe office; sending relevant information on request to doctors and health care professionals via email or fax; arranging referral where appropriate to other services including MotherSafe Clinic.
Counsellors are expected to keep up to date with latest publications and information regarding exposures during pregnancy and breastfeeding. From time to time counsellors may be required to provide education and talks to consumer groups and health professionals as part of ongoing professional development. Counsellors may also be involved in clinical follow up of patients as part of MotherSafe’s ongoing commitment to research.
And other such duties consistent with the classification that may be required from time to time in this position.

Selection Criteria
- Tertiary qualifications in Pharmacy and current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA)
- Demonstrated skills in the provision of counselling
- Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to identify key messages, issues and concerns when communicating with others
- Demonstrated knowledge of medications and pharmaceuticals.
- Demonstrated strong computer literacy with experience in Microsoft Office, Internet and email, and familiarity with health information systems
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical information systems.
- Record of ongoing professional development
- Proven attention to detail and accuracy in undertaking all tasks with demonstrated problem solving skills
