At Hunter New England Health, enjoy a career where you're challenged by meaningful work and supported by a team dedicated to enriching health in millions of ways every day.

Join Our Geriatrics Team

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced and highly organised Administration Officer (Medical Typist) to join our Geriatrics Service. Working in a job-share arrangement, you'll provide essential administrative and clerical support to Staff Specialist Consultants and Visiting Medical Officers (VMOs) across inpatient and outpatient services.

This rewarding role offers variety, autonomy and the opportunity to make a genuine difference in supporting the delivery of quality care for older people within our community.

About the Role

This role is on a job-share basis. As a key member of the team, you will provide comprehensive administrative support to clinicians while ensuring patients, families and healthcare providers receive a professional and responsive service.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Booking and coordinating outpatient clinic appointments
  • Contacting patients and family members to confirm appointments
  • Managing enquiries from patients, families and healthcare providers
  • Typing and preparing medical correspondence following clinic consultations
  • Maintaining accurate patient records and referral information
  • Supporting data collection, reporting and statistical requirements
  • Coordinating correspondence and administrative workflows for medical staff
  • Providing reception and telephone support as required

About You

We are looking for a professional and motivated administration professional who thrives in a busy healthcare environment.

You will bring:

  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • A commitment to confidentiality and professionalism
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and electronic record systems
  • The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team environment
  • A patient-focused approach and commitment to quality service delivery

The ideal candidate is highly organised, detail-oriented, and professional, with strong communication and administrative skills. While technical systems knowledge and medical terminology are important, these can be developed—the most critical attributes are accuracy, discretion, prioritisation, and the ability to manage a fast-paced workload effectively.

Support and Development

You'll be supported through a comprehensive two-week orientation and training program, ensuring you have the skills and confidence to succeed in the role. Ongoing guidance and support will be provided by experienced administrative and clinical staff.

What you'll be doing

Provide accurate typing of medical reports and correspondence; administrative support to staff specialists and other doctors within the service; reception service; and manage face to face and telephone enquiries.
