About the Opportunity:

NSW Health Pathology are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Medical Laboratory Technician in Molecular and Cytogenetics to join our dynamic team in the Genetics laboratory at Randwick. We are seeking candidates with technical bench experience performing a range of genetic tests, particularly those used in the investigation of prenatal and postnatal genetic disorders, infertility and reproductive genetics, developmental delay, and haematological malignancies.

The Genetics Laboratory at Randwick is part of NSW Health Pathology and is one of the major Australian centres for genetic diagnostics, providing a comprehensive genome diagnostic service in a consultative pathology context. The laboratory provides a wide range of assays including karyotyping, FISH, microarray and single to whole exome sequencing to assist in the diagnosis of rare diseases.


What you'll be doing

Responsible for delivering a range of operational laboratory activities including the coordination and provisions of scientific and technical training and the ongoing review, development and quality management of laboratory practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement.

  1. Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within a discipline relevant to the department, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Systems
  3. Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  4. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations
  5. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff
  6. Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  7. Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities
  8. Demonstrated recent experience in genetic laboratory techniques in a diagnostic setting
