About the opportunity
We currently have multiple positions available for enthusiastic Medical Laboratory Technicians to join the Bacteriology sector of our Microbiology Laboratory at Liverpool Hospital. The available positions include permanent full-time, permanent part-time (24 hours per week) and temporary full-time until February 2027 with the potential availability of ongoing employment.

This laboratory provides Microbiology services to several hospitals within the South West Sydney Local Health District including Liverpool, Fairfield, Campbelltown, Bankstown, Camden and Bowral hospitals, using state-of-the-art automation technology and digital bacteriology. These positions are key to the continued provision our high-class 24-hour, 7-day-per-week Microbiology services, and as such participation in an on-call roster is mandatory.

Duties include specimen processing, microscopy, culture plate reading, susceptibility reporting, and performing some molecular assays. Other laboratory duties, including the preparation of materials and the maintenance of equipment in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols, will also be undertaken.

What you'll be doing
In addition to gaining key skills in digital bacterial plate culture reading, you will be performing a range of laboratory investigations and tests (manual and automated) and technical tasks by applying established methods and procedures, as directed. Undertake other laboratory duties, including the preparation of materials and the maintenance of equipment in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols.

  1. Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within relevant to bacteriology, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Systems
  3. Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  4. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations
  5. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff
  6. Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  7. Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities
