Interested in kickstarting your career with Pathology? NSW Health Pathology are looking for a talented Technical Assistant to join our Molecular Medicine Department in a range of different roles. Based at John Hunter Hospital, we are looking for motivated, team players!

The NSW Health Pathology Molecular Medicine Department is located a short drive from Newcastle, on the John Hunter Hospital Campus, with beautiful surroundings and outdoor areas. The team you will be working with is dedicated, committed and positive, and strive for excellence to provide a quality Genomics service to NSW communities.


What you'll be doing
This position offers an exciting opportunity to work in a highly sophisticated Genomics Laboratory that specialises in cancer genomic testing in addition to undertaking routine molecular genetics and cytogenetic investigations. You will work in a team of highly trained and experienced technical and scientific staff that offer innovative genomic testing solutions. You will perform a range of laboratory support and/or specimen reception services and/or collection services, and provide assistance to laboratory staff, under supervision, to deliver a patient focused service.

  1. Certificate III in Pathology Collections, or Pathology Assistance and/or previous experience a pathology setting or a demonstrated ability to learn all aspects of the pre analytical environment.
  2. Demonstrated understanding of genetics and molecular techniques; and their application in a diagnostic pathology laboratory.
  3. Demonstrated ability to manage tasks in a demanding environment where there are competing priorities and time constraints.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers, internal and external with 
  5. Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills combined with the ability to investigate and resolve general issues.
  6. Willingness to operate and maintain pre analytical equipment as required and possess proficient computer skills including high attention to detail and data accuracy.
  7. Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality and proper handling of sensitive information in a laboratory setting, following relevant legislation, policies, and requirements.
  8. Willingness to participate in a 24/7 rotating shift roster, including weekends, public holidays, and night shifts, and the ability to travel to any site or location within the operational area as required.
