Make a lasting difference from the very beginning. Join the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at John Hunter Children’s Hospital, on the lands of the Awabakal people, and play a vital role in supporting newborns and their families.

As a Lactation Consultant, you’ll use your specialist expertise to support mothers and families with breastfeeding and lactation, helping give every baby the best possible start. You’ll provide expert advice, education and practical support across the NICU, John Hunter Children’s Hospital and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Working alongside nursing, midwifery and medical teams, you’ll share your expertise, strengthen clinical practice and contribute to the ongoing development of lactation services.

What You'll Be Doing

In this role, you will:

  • Provide specialist lactation assessment, advice and support to mothers and families.
  • Promote and support breastfeeding and optimal feeding outcomes for neonates.
  • Provide education and guidance to nursing, midwifery and medical staff.
  • Deliver individualised, family-centred and culturally safe care.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to support positive outcomes for babies and families.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of lactation services within the NICU.


About You

You are an experienced Registered Nurse with strong neonatal experience and a passion for breastfeeding and lactation support.

You will have:

  • Current AHPRA registration.
  • Extensive neonatal nursing experience.
  • IBCLC certification or working towards certification.
  • Strong clinical, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to family-centred and culturally safe care.
  • A flexible, empathetic and collaborative approach.
