Applications are invited from suitable qualified medical practitioners for the above position in the Western Sydney Local Health District. The position will be primarily located at Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospitals within the Department of General Surgery.

Senior Medical Staff are expected to provide admitting, consultative, diagnostic, procedural, outpatient and on call specialty services as determined and required by the facility.

Appointees may be required to participate in other on call rosters at nominated facilities within Western Sydney Local Health District as determined by clinical operations. 

The Clinical Superintendent (Surgery) is primarily responsible for organising and coordinating surgical registrars to provide effective, safe and efficient clinical services at the nominated facility. The Superintendent is expected to contribute to the development and implementation of local clinical initiatives, optimise patient flow through effective rostering and deployment of surgical registrars, and promulgate clinical governance accountabilities. The Clinical Superintendent will work with the various Facility Managers, Clinical Network Directors, RACS appointed Supervisors of Surgical Training and Medical Services Directorate in the conduct of their duties. The Clinical Superintendent has administrative responsibility for surgical registrars and surgical resident medical officers including the provision of rosters and leave which will be managed in liaison with the Heads of Department of Surgery.

The Clinical Superintendent (Surgery) will provide clinical leadership and be a role model to aspiring surgeons in all aspects of their professional life at the Facility, by application of both clinical and administrative duties and promoting surgery and its sub-specialities as a vocation.

The Clinical Superintendent will provide general supervision and organisation of basic surgical trainees. The Clinical Superintendent will appraise the performance of registrars and senior medical staff, and work to assist the RACS appointed Supervisors of Surgical Training in the organisation of clinical examinations (including trial examinations), if required. 

The Clinical Superintendent will provide clinical services up to 40% of the appointed time within a subspecialty area. Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate research and teaching is expected. 

Western Sydney Local Health District is responsible for the provision of health services to the local government area comprised of Auburn, Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Holroyd, and Parramatta and tertiary care.  These services are provided through a number of hospital and community-based facilities located strategically across the District.

Western Sydney Local Health District is committed to achieving continuous quality improvement in client services within a Quality Management framework, with a supporting Strategic Plan aimed at the continuous improvement of all facilities. The District has individual facilities located at Westmead, Cumberland, Auburn, Blacktown and Mount Druitt.

All hospitals provide a range of both in-patient and outpatient services to clients both from within the boundaries of the District and cross border flows. In addition to this, there are a number of facilitates strategically located across the District that provide primary health care services to the community.

Blacktown and Mt Druitt General Surgical Department is one department that operates over two campuses. The department has a higher-than-average emergency general surgical workload and operates an Acute Surgical Unit model of care. The department provides subspecialty care in colorectal, bariatric/metabolic, benign upper GIT, complex abdominal wall, head and neck and breast surgery. The department also has a strong perioperative care focus and has a perioperative care physician embedded within the department. 

The position is a 12 months fixed-term appointment for the 2027 Clinical Year commencing 1 February 2027 to 6 February 2028.

Applicants expecting to be awarded fellowship within 3 months are eligible to apply.

Successful applicants may be offered a conjoint university appointment within the Faculty of Medicine at the relevant University attached to each facility. The level of academic appointment will be commensurate with the qualifications, experience and scholarship and will be held only during the tenure of the Western Sydney Local Health District appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to the District for clinical matters

Essential Requirements:

1.     Possess or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) or  equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award 2022 Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.

2.     Sound clinical knowledge in elective and emergency general surgical procedures and practice demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position

3.     Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including high level interpersonal and communication skills.

4.     Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team.

5.     Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice.

6.     Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision.

7.     Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied or clinical research within the Department.
