As the steady presence for children and young people at their most vulnerable, this after‑hours CYMHS Clinical Nurse Consultant role provides specialist Child and Youth Mental Health consultation across Emergency Department and community/inpatient settings, offering calm, kind, and expert care to young people and families facing crisis.

What you'll be doing
In this impactful after‑hours role, you will be a calm, trusted, and compassionate presence for children and young people presenting in crisis, when they and their families need support the most. Drawing on your advanced clinical expertise in Child and Youth Mental Health, you will provide specialist consultation across the Emergency Department and community/inpatient settings, including PECC, paediatric wards, and adult mental health units. You will lead with confidence and kindness, guiding clinical decision‑making, advocating for safe and developmentally appropriate care, and supporting multidisciplinary teams to deliver the highest standard of mental health nursing practice. Every shift, you will make a meaningful difference by helping young people feel seen, heard, and supported during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

People of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background are encouraged to apply.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Authority to practice as a Registered Nurse from AHPRA with at least 5 years full -time equivalent post registration experience, approved post graduate qualifications within mental health, child and adolescent mental health or related speciality and substantial relevant clinical experience within this setting.
  2. Demonstrated ability to initiate and lead evidence based nursing practice in the assessment, care planning and care delivery to children and young people with complex mental health issues. Ability to provide expert clinical consultancy, networking and communicating across a range of key internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both as a member of a multidisciplinary team and independently.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to strengths based practice and recovery focused care as well as consumer and carer participation and consultation.
  5. Ability to be able to work afternoon/evening shifts.
