About the Role

Formed in 1882, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) is a major metropolitan tertiary referral hospital and a principal provider of specialist healthcare. It remains one of the nation’s most respected hospitals, with a distinguished history serving the health needs of local, statewide, national and international communities. 

The Acute Care Service model of care provides: 

  1. Mental Health assessments to consumers within the community experiencing acute mental health problems (including a rapid response when indicated) and determining an appropriate pathway to care (e.g., community treatment; assist consumers access and admission to inpatient treatment). 
  2. Short term mental health treatment in the community often as an alternative to hospital.
  3. In reach to hospital to promote effective follow up post mental health admission. 
  4. Collaborative care for consumers transferring between hospital and community. 
  5. The model provides short term mental health interventions in the community for consumers experiencing mental health distress. Once the symptoms have resolved and the presentation is no longer acute the team collaborate with other stakeholders for the most appropriate ongoing care and treatment. 

  

The Mental Health Nurse will practice in keeping with the standardised Sydney LHD position description for the profession in addition to this position description.

Ideal Candidate

  • Recognised nursing tertiary qualifications, current nursing registration with AHPRA. 
  • Competencies to provide contemporary mental health practice. 
  • Understanding of and commitment to recovery-oriented services and consumer involvement in service provision. 
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with GPs, Service partners and external providers. 
  • Current NSW Drivers Licence (P1 and P2 acceptable).
