The role
 
Clinical Nurse Consultant Grade 1 means: a registered nurse/midwife appointed as such to a position approved by the Health Service, who has at least 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience, and in addition who has approved or is working towards post registration nursing/midwifery qualifications relevant to the field in which he/she is appointed, or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the Health Service.
 
The Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC), Acute Care Services is responsible for the provision, maintenance and ongoing development of acute inpatient services to the patient's of the Royal Hospital for Women (RHW).The CNC is responsible to the Manager of the,- Acute Care, Antenatal and Pregnancy Day Stay Services, and works in close cooperation with the Directors of Anaesthetics, Obstetric Medicine, Nursing Unit Managers of Gynaecology, Gynaecological Oncology, Anaesthetic Fellows and registrars. The CNC provides a complex clinical service integrating daily clinical assessments over a wide range of acute services meeting both surgery specific requirements and unique patient specific problems. There is a significant role in the provision of a coordinated and effective emergency response system including adult resuscitation and CPR, management of acute collapse and recognition and management of rapidly deteriorating clinical situations. This includes regular involvement in scenario driven training for maternal collapse as well as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation across the hospital. The CNC will engage in the support and training of staff at other facilities in the SESLHD Network regarding the management of acute emergencies affecting women, including management of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome, maternal collapse and massive blood transfusion.
 
The CNC will engage in the ongoing development of policy and procedure research and quality activities within the Acute Care Service. The CNC will collect data; liaise with medical and nursing colleagues and assist with the planning of equipment requirements for the management of resuscitation and the management of acutely ill patients.

Selection Criteria

  1. Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  2. Minimum of five years full time equivalent post graduate qualification experience.
  3. Minimum of 1 years’ experience in an intensive or high dependency setting.
  4. Demonstrated effective communication and inter-personal skills across a variety of mediums and knowledge of the practice development framework to clinical practice.
  5. Demonstrated involvement in the development/change of clinical practice underpinned by evidence based research.
  6. Demonstrated ability to contribute to strategic and clinical service planning.
  7. Proven skills in clinical teaching, the identification of education needs in the clinical area, and competency in the use of contemporary information systems.
  8. Proven clinical leadership skills and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
