The vision for Illawarra Shoalhaven Local health District (ISLHD) is 'Excellent services, quality partnerships, healthy communities.' ISLHD is committed to provide best practice health care and programs that promote the health and wellbeing of people in the Illawarra Shoalhaven.

Based on the post-natal unit at Wollongong Hospital (WH), the CMS-2 Lactation Support role will support staff in the maternity and neonatal nursery departments with planning and implementing breastfeeding care for inpatients within their scope of practice. They will consult inpatients with complex lactation support needs and develop feeding plans in consultation with the woman. The role will also be expected to provide lactation support and consultation for patients having care in other wards and areas of the hospital as appropriate.

The CMS-2 will develop a regular schedule of inpatient breastfeeding education to improve patient knowledge and autonomy with breastfeeding skills. The CMS- 2 will work with the CMC Lactation Support in establishing compliance with the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the WHO Code for Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and the NSW Ministry of Health Breastfeeding Policy Directive for the implementation and maintenance of Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) accreditation. Providing regular staff breastfeeding education, and participating in relevant quality improvement initiatives, the CMS- 2 will report to and update the NUM/MUM on progression of BFHI principles.

The role requires membership of the ISLHD Breastfeeding Reference Group and representation of lactation on other local health district committees as needed. The CMS- 2s will negotiate regular meetings with the CMC Lactation Support and work with a divisional focus. Teamwork is a vital component of this role. It is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to the high standard of care offered across the district with regards to clinical practice, policy development, teaching and research.
