Nepean Hospital is seeking an experienced and passionate Clinical Midwife Specialist (CMS) – Lactation to provide expert clinical leadership within the Maternity Service.
This role is pivotal in promoting, supporting and embedding best-practice infant feeding education and lactation support across Antenatal, Postnatal and Neonatal care settings. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to improve breastfeeding outcomes and enhance the experience of women, babies and families.
The role is to provide high‑quality lactation services within a supportive, multidisciplinary team environmen, deliver individualised, woman‑centred breastfeeding support, exercising extended clinical autonomy and decision‑making within a therapeutic environment, provide direct clinical care when required to support women and families, maintain safe service delivery, and respond to clinical priorities across the maternity service. You will work collaboratively within the team, acting as an advocate for women and families, and as a role model, resource, and mentor to undergraduate and qualified health professionals, including nursing, midwifery, and medical staff, ensure a high standard of care for women and their families through the implementation and ongoing maintenance of policies, standards, and clinical practice guidelines and procedures and participate in and facilitate the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies, clinical practice guidelines, and procedures relating to lactation and infant feeding.

What you will bring to the role
- Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Midwife or Registered Nurse/Midwife, with relevant post‑registration qualifications and at least three (3) years’ full‑time equivalent experience working in the clinical area of the specified post‑graduate qualification, or such other qualifications or equivalent experience deemed appropriate.
- Current International Board‑Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification, or actively working towards IBCLC certification, with a demonstrated willingness and commitment to maintaining IBCLC certification, including meeting ongoing professional development and recertification requirements.
- Demonstrated clinical knowledge and recent clinical experience in midwifery care, including the assessment and management of complex breastfeeding and lactation issues for women and babies within a multidisciplinary healthcare setting.
- Demonstrated application of evidence‑based practice and critical thinking to advocate for and implement individualised, woman‑centred care, with a strong commitment to continuous quality improvement, service development, and risk management.
- Demonstrated ability to provide safe, high‑quality midwifery care in accordance with relevant legislation, organisational policies, procedures, and clinical practice guidelines, with accountability for professional practice.
- Highly developed written, verbal and digital communication skills, including effective use of information technology, with the ability to build rapport and communicate clearly, respectfully, and professionally with women, families, and members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, delegate, and negotiate with others to deliver high‑quality midwifery care, show leadership in clinical practice, and positively contribute to change management initiatives that improve care delivery and outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to provide high quality breastfeeding support while managing workload effectively, upholding professional values, and maintaining clinical competence and accountability in lactation and breastfeeding practice.
