Hunter New England Local Health District is seeking an innovative and highly motivated Clinical Director to lead our Department of Medicine at Maitland and Kurri Kurri Hospitals. About the Role
As Clinical Director, you will provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership to the Department of Medicine, ensuring care is:
• Safe, effective, and evidence-based
• Patient-centred and high quality
• Aligned with HNELHD strategic and operational priorities
 

You will lead a high-performing multidisciplinary team managing a broad case mix (~4,500 separations annually), while also overseeing governance and collaboration across multiple subspecialties, including: Cardiology, Oncology, Palliative Care, Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Respiratory, HiTH, Virtual Care, and more.
This diverse scope offers significant impact at both hospital and district levels.
 

Key Leadership Responsibilities
• Provide clinical leadership, supervision, and governance across the department
• Lead service planning, strategy, and performance improvement
• Oversee medical workforce management including recruitment, wellbeing, and training
• Drive education and research excellence aligned with RACP, HETI and university partners
• Champion contemporary models of care (General Medicine, MAUs, virtual care, rapid access clinics)
• Lead quality, safety, and risk management initiatives
• Build strong collaborative partnerships across specialties, services and external stakeholders
• Represent the department in hospital and district-wide forums

Approximately 50% of the role is clinical, maintaining strong engagement with frontline care.
 

About You
You are an experienced and collaborative medical leader with:
• Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and AHPRA registration
• Proven senior leadership experience in general medicine or a related subspecialty
• Strong skills in service development, workforce leadership, and governance
• A passion for education, training, and accreditation excellence
• Demonstrated ability to lead change and influence system-level improvements
• Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills
