We are seeking an experienced and passionate Clinical Nurse Specialist Grade 2 to join the First Steps Parenting Centre at Wallsend Health Campus.
First Steps provides specialised support to vulnerable parents, infants and young children during the first three years of life, with a focus on early intervention, child development, parenting and family wellbeing.
This rewarding community-based role is primarily delivered through home visits, with clinic-based appointments and a weekly outreach clinic at St Phillips Young Parents College.
You will build meaningful relationships with families, providing tailored education, practical strategies and support to strengthen parental confidence, promote healthy development and improve outcomes for children.
Your role
You will provide comprehensive assessment, education and support across a range of complex child and family needs, including:
- Complex sleep and settling.
- Complex feeding concerns.
- Child development and developmental monitoring, including ASQ and ASQ-SE.
- Postnatal mental health and parent wellbeing.
- Domestic and family violence.
- Parenting and behavioural concerns, including the use of approaches such as Marte Meo.
- Child protection and safeguarding.
- Referral and care coordination with appropriate health and community services.
Working with Families and Services
You will facilitate groups including Circle of Security, PND and Self-Compassion, helping parents build confidence and strengthen relationships with their children.
Working closely with families and services including DCJ, Child Wellbeing Unit, Family Support Services, Speech Pathology and Dental Services, you will coordinate referrals and support families to access the right services at the right time.
Your Skills and Experience.
We are looking for a positive, motivated clinician who is passionate about working with children and families and can build trusting relationships with people experiencing complex circumstances.
You will bring:
- Strong clinical experience working with children, parents and families.
- Knowledge of child development, parenting and family wellbeing.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Confidence working with vulnerable families and complex needs.
- Commitment to family-centred, evidence-based practice and ongoing professional development.
Essential Criteria:
- Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse/Midwife with AHPRA.
- Postgraduate qualifications in Child and Family Health Nursing.
- Minimum three years’ experience working in Child and Family Health Nursing.
