The Role

The main role of a Child and Adolescent Neurofeedback Specialist Counsellor is to provide assessment, counselling and neurofeedback therapy to children and adolescents from refugee backgrounds who are survivors of trauma. Using innovative techniques such as Neurofeedback, Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) this role will assist in alleviating the effects of trauma, fostering resilience, and promoting emotional and psychological healing in a supportive and culturally sensitive environment.

This role would also include liaising with schools, teachers, counsellors and other relevant professionals, while using STARTTS systemic approach in working with children and adolescents and their families. This role is also expected to participate in research and other relevant projects and to provide internal and external trainings related to neurofeedback, Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and biofeedback.

Work Type:
     Full-time; 38 hours per week. Contract up to 30 June 2026 (Continuation subject to ongoing funding)

Vaccination Requirement: Category A
Salary:          
Health Education Officer or other relevant classification based on qualifications, experience, and requirements of the role. A generous salary packaging scheme is also offered.

Essential Requirements:

  1. Relevant qualifications and current and full registration with AHPRA or other relevant Peak Body and eligibility for Medicare Provider number.
  2. Understanding of refugee issues, and the effects of torture and trauma on children and adolescents, their families and communities.
  3. Understanding the complexities of intergenerational trauma and its impact on children and adolescents.
  4. Demonstrated skills and experience in providing assessment and therapy to children and adolescents.
  5. Demonstrated experience and ability to advocate cooperate and liaise with school personnel including counsellors, teachers and parents.
  6. Training and experience in Neurofeedback therapy or readiness to undertake further training and develop skills in Neurofeedback.
  7. Demonstrated interest in applied neuroscience and/or use of neuromodulation techniques in working with children and adolescents.
  8. Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office and demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships, including proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team within a multicultural environment and act with diplomacy and discretion when dealing with sensitive and confidential issues.

Desirable Requirements:

  1. BCIA Neurofeedback certification achieved, or in progress.
  2. Current NSW Driver’s Licence.

*This position is considered child-related employment and will require a Working with Children Background Check and a National Police Check.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS  
*This role is a Category A role. It is mandatory for Category A workers to meet and maintain the vaccination criteria (as per the current NSW Health and STARTTS policies) 
Vaccination and/or assessment is required for Category A workers for the following transmissible diseases – measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chickenpox), hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough) and tuberculosis.

Covid 19 vaccination is strongly recommended, but not a requirement for employment.

If successful you must also provide evidence of vaccination and/or assessment. 
Should you not be able to comply with vaccination requirements before your commencement date, the offer of employment may be withdrawn.
If you have a medical reason for why you cannot be vaccinated, a medical contraindication evidence will be required.
