What you'll be doing
Balmain Hospital's General Practice Casualty (GPC) is a walk-in urgent care service providing assessment and early management of acute medical and surgical conditions, musculoskeletal injuries, wounds and minor paediatric presentations. GPC sees approximately 30–50 patients per day from the local Inner West community.
As a Career Medical Officer, you will:
- Assess and manage undifferentiated, low-to-moderate acuity presentations across all ages
- Provide fracture and wound care, including plastering and suturing
- Initiate investigation and stabilise patients requiring transfer to a tertiary centre
- Supervise and teach junior medical officers
- Participate in Hospital in the Home (HITH) clinical care
- Contribute to quality improvement, clinical audit and Morbidity & Mortality activities
The GPC operates three shifts per day, seven days a week (morning, afternoon and evening). This role requires availability for a mix of weekday, evening and weekend shifts.
Balmain Hospital is a sub-acute facility located in Sydney's Inner West, with geriatric medicine, rehabilitation, and outpatient services. GPC provides a collegial, team-based working environment with nursing and allied health support on site.

Ideal Candidate
- Minimum of 5 years Postgraduate clinical experience OR have recently worked in General Practice for 3 years OR hold RACGP Fellowship and Current Full and Unconditional Registration with the Medical Board of Australia/Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Recent Emergency Medicine, Acute General Practice or GPC experience or successful completion of an accredited Emergency Medicine course within last 2 years.
- Awareness and understanding of the principles of acute general practice, Hospital in The Home, minor fracture and acute wound patient management.
- Demonstrated commitment to Quality Improvement and Continuing Professional Development.
- Effective Computer and Information Technology Skills.
- Highly Developed Verbal and Written Communication Skills and demonstrated Organisational and Time Management Skills.
- Experience as a Medical Educator or GP Supervisor.
- Awareness, understanding and commitment to principles of Infection Control, Work Health Safety and Equal Employment Opportunities.
